SOUTH AFRICA 2010

AND SO IT BEGAN…

Lionsraw’s first legacy tour, to the Valley of a 1000 Hills during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, saw 300 football fans combine their passion for the beautiful game and helping those in need. Their time spent in South Africa included developing several soccer for health programs and construct four necessary facilities for housing, health, sport and education.

The idea for Lionsraw was born in Portugal at the Euros of 2004, however the South Africa Legacy Tour was where the foundation of the charity was formed…

WHAT WE DID

During the two week project in Durban we completed or laid the foundations of four building projects in the Valley of 1000 Hills, Durban We built a set of changing rooms for the local football pitch, constructed a four-bedroom house for use by the children’s home and built two blocks of toilets and classrooms for a new school. Alongside all the construction we also established seven football academies.

Once the World Cup was over, we decided to build on the legacy we had created and continue the amazing work we had started. Lionsraw South Africa was formed officially in November 2010 and exactly two years later we obtained NPO status (106-984) and eventually we received PBO and Section 18a status.

THE STEVEN DAVISON PRIMARY SCHOOL…

The Steven Davison Primary School (SDPS) was established in 2010 after two classrooms and a kitchen/storage area were built by Lionsraw UK volunteers. Before it was built, the closest school was a steep 6km walk away. The walk was dangerous, with an average of 5 children a year being killed by cars while traveling to school…

…over the next 8 years, 9 more classrooms, a library and a block of  flushing toilets were built by Lionsraw volunteers.
